Local High School Scholars Partner with SD Children’s Discovery Museum to Create Interactive Science Exhibits for Elementary Students

Group Members of Top Projects Awarded Internship Opportunities

ESCONDIDO, November 13, 2018 – High school scholars from Del Lago Academy Campus of Applied Science will be showcasing their annual interdisciplinary projects that focus on building interactive science exhibits with an elementary audience in mind. Del Lago Academy partners with the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum and a local third grade elementary class in order to guide student projects.

Project ideas are generated from elementary students’ wonderings about the world and the environment around them. High school students then work for a month to create hands-on, interactive science exhibits based on these wonderings. The big event is the museum exhibition day where Del Lago Academy hosts third graders in the school gym and all 50 projects are on display. The elementary students engage with all the projects, learn from the high school students, and gain a deeper understanding of science and their world.

The staff of the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum are also present at the event to judge projects. The top projects are then displayed at the actual museum in Escondido and the students involved in those projects are offered potential internship opportunities for the future.

Leandra Heyveld, a Del Lago Academy scholar who took part in the project last year stated, “This project definitely pushed us to develop problem solving techniques, expand our creativity, and improve our teamwork skills. My group has gained so many life lessons, and on top of that, we get to share our final products with children to aid them in understanding crucial concepts.”

“It’s our pleasure to stimulate the young minds of third graders, and others, to get them interested in science at such a young age,” says another Del Lago Academy scholar, Jack Patteson.

Come and join us for our annual science museum exhibition at Del Lago Academy on November 16th, 2018 from 9:30-11:30am in the school gym.
